Check out this week's “Spinning Back Creek.” MMA Junkie's weekly live show with a twist on the biggest topics in mixed martial arts.
This week's panel of Mike Vaughn, Matthew Wells, and Brian “Gos” Garcia, with host “Gorgeous” George Garcia, will be broadcast live from noon ET (9 a.m. PT) to discuss: To do.
- Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal are set to do this again in June, but this time the rivals will face off inside a boxing ring instead of an MMA cage. Former UFC mainstays will be competing regardless of the organization they made their name in, and will, in fact, compete on the same night as UFC 302. This rematch between two of the most popular MMA fighters in recent memory had the power of publicity. But should he have been put in a cage like the first time they met?
- Alexandre Pantoja's next flyweight title challenger is Steve Arceg. UFC 301 has a headliner, a flyweight title match that no one saw coming. Pantoja will get a chance to defend his title at home, but the challenger from UFC No. 10 Erceg caught many fighters by surprise, including several in his own weight class. Was this perfect timing for Erceg, or is there a bigger message being sent to the department?
- Jose Aldo, the former featherweight champion who left the UFC after his 20th fight and dabbled in professional boxing, was instantly inducted into the Hall of Fame, is back. Aldo will return to action against Jonathan Martinez at UFC 301 in Rio de Janeiro, adding some much-needed weight to the light pay-per-view event. More importantly, what should we expect from the 37-year-old Aldo when he returns to the UFC?
- Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall met at a sporting event last weekend. The moment when the two heavyweights met face-to-face and exchanged respectful words became a hot topic. Interim heavyweight titleholder Aspinall placed a hand on Jones' shoulder, and the UFC champ quickly removed it before a brief exchange ensued. I felt both respect and tension. Should the UFC change course here from Jones' anticipated fight with Stipe Miocic and unify the UFC titles next?
- Islam Makhachev sat down with MMA Junkie's Mike Vaughn and touched on some interesting topics. Among them: Why I want Dustin Poirier to be my next title challenger, my thoughts on the BMF title fight between Justin Gaethje and Max Holloway, and why I couldn't face Leon Edwards in a champion vs. champion match at UFC 300. etc. were included. What struck you most about this interview with the UFC lightweight champion?
