Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia will have a fierce battle tonight, rekindling their rivalry from their amateur days.
The 25-year-old American went 6-3-3 before turning pro, making Haney a true pound-for-pound star. “Dream” reigned as the undisputed lightweight champion until the end of last year, when he vacated the belt and took the WBC super lightweight title from Regis Prograis.
Following that masterclass, the undefeated Haney was scheduled to defend his gold medal for the first time this weekend, but Garcia's failed weigh-in disqualified him from winning the belt.
Garcia comes into the fight with just one loss, having been stopped by Gervonta Davis a year ago. 'King Ryan' bounced back from that loss by stopping Oscar Duarte in December, but he will face an even tougher test here. Garcia's recent behavior outside the ring has raised concerns about his mental health, and on Friday he lost three pounds, but accepted a bet that would pay Haney $500,000 for every pound he weighed over.
