Former Jackson State football player and current Detroit Lions linebacker James Houston will host a meet-and-greet at M-Bar on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Houston will also host a free football camp Sunday at Jackson State University's practice facility.
Children will receive a free T-shirt and there will be two sessions: the first session starts at 9am and is for ages 5-10. The second session starts at 10:30am and is for ages 11-17.
“Football has given me so much in life,” Houston said, “and I'm grateful to have the opportunity to give back to the community that has supported me throughout my career.”
Houston was selected 217th overall in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He said the camp's goal is to “teach the fundamentals, foster a love of the game and show kids that with hard work and dedication, they can achieve their dreams.”
2022 NFL football season. The Detroit Lions started 4-6 but then inserted Houston into the lineup. In Week 12, he led the Lions to a 28-25 victory over the Buffalo Bills. In that game, Houston sacked Bills quarterback Josh Allen twice and had a fumble recovery.
Houston led the NFL in sacks by rookies (8) entering the final week of the season. In the final game, Lions teammate Aidan Hutchinson sacked Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers twice to become the rookie sack leader with 9.5 sacks in 17 games, compared to Houston's eight sacks in seven games.
The 2023 football season was tough for Houston. The second-year player broke his ankle while playing special teams in the second game of the season against the Seattle Seahawks. He spent the season rehabbing and returned to play in the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers.
