Mark Carter, co-head football coach at Goodyear Desert Edge High School, was named along with his twin brother Marcus. arizona republic The Agua Fria Union High School District announced Wednesday that it has suspended last season's Coach of the Year award.
A contact was made to Agua Fria Union High School District spokeswoman Megan Griego, who said Marcus Carter will remain as the program's head coach.
“There will be changes to the Desert Edge High School football program,” Griego wrote in an email. “Immediate steps are being taken to ensure that the football program continues to operate smoothly and successfully.
“Coach Marcus Carter will continue to lead and coach the Desert Edge football program during the upcoming 2024/2025 season. As head coach, he will maintain the team's values, strategy, and goals, ensuring that our student-athletes are at the forefront of the game. We will guide you to achieve excellent results at home and abroad.''
“For the 2024-25 season, Mark Carter will not serve as head coach or be involved in any football-related activities, but will continue to be a part of the Desert Edge community as a teacher and head track coach.”
Neither Marcus nor Mark responded to Republic's messages.
Griego did not say why Mark Carter will be suspended next season.
Arizona Interscholastic Association Executive Director David Hines told The Republic that the AIA was notified by Desert Edge of the violation regarding the social media posts.
“I have not yet seen the actual report,” Hines said in a text message Wednesday night.
The Carter twins led Desert Edge to the 5A state championship game, where the Scorpions lost 42-41 to Gilbert Higley in December.
The Carters left Phoenix South Mountain after being hired as co-head coaches to lead the program four years ago and leading the Jaguars to a 7-3 season.
Desert Edge reached the open state playoffs in 2020, its first year.
