Demetrious Johnson claims that boxing has more appeal than mixed martial arts at the moment.
Johnson, a former UFC flyweight champion and current ONE flyweight champion, is more interested in boxing storylines than MMA.
“Right now, I think boxing is more entertaining than MMA,” Johnson said on his YouTube channel. “MMA has had its moments, but right now it's just Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney. Ryan Garcia blew up.”
“Then we had Francis Ngannou getting knocked out by Anthony Joshua. Then we had the beautiful Tyson Fury and (Oleksandr) Usyk beating Fury to become heavyweight champion. That fight was just amazing. I was glued to the edge of my seat from round one to round 12.”
Johnson has previously said he's unsure about his mixed martial arts future and recently expressed an interest in making his boxing debut. On the mixed martial arts front, he is most excited about lightweight champion Islam Makhachev taking on Dustin Poirier in the main event of Saturday's UFC 302. He believes the bout is Poirier's last chance to become an undefeated champion.
“Right now we're waiting in the MMA world,” Johnson said. “There's a couple of things going on. In ONE Championship, Cade Ruotolo is making his MMA debut. There's a couple of other things going on. But I think what we're waiting for in MMA right now is Islam taking on Dustin Poirier.”
