NEW YORK (AP) — Elaine Thompson-Heller, the reigning Olympic 100-meter gold medalist from Jamaica, had to be helped off the track after appearing to injure her Achilles tendon during Sunday's race at the USA Track and Field New York City Grand Prix.
Thompson-Heller got off to a good start at Icahn Stadium and led the way until she began to lose momentum midway through the 100 meters. The 31-year-old sprinter began limping near the finish line, lost a cleat on her right foot and was then carried off the track.
The Associated Press left a message with her representative.
Thompson-Heller is the favorite to win both the 100 and 200 meters at this summer's Olympics in Paris, as she tries to become just the second athlete in history to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in both the 100 and 200 meters, joining fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt.
Nigeria's Faber Ofili won Sunday's race in a season's best time of 11.18 seconds. Thompson-Heller came in last in 11.48 seconds.
Thompson-Heller has struggled with Achilles pain throughout her career and Australia's Olympic trials are being held this month.
