2024 U.S. Olympic Selection
The second day of the finals at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials promises to be an exciting one, with three sports and four semifinals on the line for qualification to the Paris Games.
Following their impressive performance in Saturday night's semi-final, attention was focused on Gretchen Walsh After setting a new world record in the women's 100m butterfly final, she is aiming to qualify for her first Olympic Games.
Walsh's time of 55.18 seconds in last night's semi-final smashed the fastest time ever by three seconds, but he still has a task ahead of him as he will need to perform well in the final to secure a lane in Paris. The 21-year-old will be surrounded by the two fastest Americans of all time, behind former US record holder Jonathan McCain. Tori Fuske Occupying lane 5, Regan Smith This will be lane 3.
Husk finished in the semifinals in 55.79 seconds, just shy of her lifetime best of 55.64, while Smith added a sub-56 second time in 55.92, good for seventh all-time.
The session began with the men's 400m individual medley final. Carson Foster It's a chance to right the wrongs of the 2021 trials, where he lost an early lead and ultimately finished third. Chase Cullis and Jay Litherland.
Kalisz and Litherland, who were 1-2 in the Tokyo Olympic final, could represent the United States in the event for a third consecutive time if they can beat Foster tonight, but that will be a tough call with Foster, who won silver medals at the 2022 and 2023 world championships, being the overwhelming favorite to win.
Foster and Kalisz both easily won their respective heats this morning to advance to the finals in 1-2 places, with Foster far ahead in 4:11.02.
The third final of the night will be the men's 100m breaststroke, which could see a tight contest between the eight men who advanced to the final just 44ths of a second apart in their semi-final time.
Nick Fink Since 2022, he has been considered the favorite to win the race and give the United States its best chance at a medal in Paris, but there's nothing so far to suggest that qualifying will be an easy stretch for the 30-year-old veteran.
Fink is the No. 3 seed. Charlie Swanson (59.34) and Josh Matheny (59.42) The American record holder after clocking 59.46 in the semifinals. Michael Andrew (59.65) lurks in lane seven.
There will also be semifinals in the men's and women's 200m freestyle, women's 100m breaststroke and men's 100m backstroke. There are no surprises with the higher seeds qualifiers in these events.
In the women's 100m breaststroke, the 46-year-old Gabriel RoseThe two-time Olympian drew roaring cheers from the crowd this morning as he clocked a personal best time of 1 minute 8.43 seconds to reach the semi-finals.
