Daniel Cormier: Tom Aspinall could change UFC's Jones/Miocic plans
His recent Youtube While on the channel, Cormier offered his opinion on the current state of the heavyweight division and how Aspinall can change that.
“Can you imagine what would happen if Tom Aspinall beat Curtis Blaydes? Then the firestorm that would gather for him to fight [Jon] “To really cause a rebellion, Aspinall has to beat Blaydes. We've seen Curtis Blaydes lose, so people will think: 'Yeah, he beat Tom Aspinall but we've seen him lose to Francis'. [Ngannou] And lose to the others…
“But if Aspinall breaks through the Blades like Sergey did, [Pavlovich]and if he only lost because of injury, people will be mad, so much so that they'll advocate for him vs. Jones… If Tom Aspinall survives this fight and looks clean and dominant, there might be a fan revolt and the UFC will be forced to do Jones vs. Aspinall. Who knows what that means for my friend Steep. [Miocic]But if that were to happen, he seems to be okay with it.”
Miocic said in a recent interview. CBS SportsShakir Majli of Yahoo! News sympathized with Aspinall's frustrations regarding the Jones fight, and seemed content to back out if the UFC decided to pull out of the Jones fight.
Jones defeated Ciryl Gane to win the then-vacant UFC heavyweight title last year at UFC 285. Since that win, Aspinall has scored back-to-back wins over Marcin Tybura and Pavlovic.
The UFC heavyweight title fight remains one of the most talked about topics in MMA for 2024. If Cormier's comments are any indication, Jones vs. Miocic may not be confirmed until Aspinall has something to say.
