Smith (15-0, 11 KOs) is a Commonwealth champion and one of Britain's best young fighters. The 27-year-old boxer and puncher defeated Sam Omaison to win the critically acclaimed Lonsdale Championship in August 2022, making three successful defenses and winning the belt outright.
“Great performance [against Zepeda] And my name is among the big names,” Smith told The Ring. “There's a lot of talent in the 140-pound weight class, a lot of good kids. We can't take easy fights.
“If I want to be a world champion and be the best, I have to get over them and prove to people that I'm one of the top players in this division.”
Zepeda (37-4, 28 KOs) is a southpaw and a very powerful puncher. The 34-year-old Californian has failed in previous world title challenges against Terry Flanagan, Jose Ramirez and Regis Prograis. But Zepeda is determined to realize his dreams and is not in England to make up his numbers.
“This is going to be a hell of a fight,” Zepeda told Matchroom Boxing. This battle must be won. The reason I'm still here is because I want new opportunities. I want a fourth chance [at a world title].
“I looked at his record. I know he's 15-0. I know he's a big British star. He's active inside the ring. He likes to move and he's kind of fast. I know he likes to get up front, so it's going to be a great fight.”
