RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Dozens of major technology companies gathered at North Carolina's McKinmon Center on Tuesday for VulnCon 2024.
The conference brought together hundreds of experts to discuss cybersecurity.
“There's so much discussion about hacking and ransomware that what everyone wants to talk about is security,” said VulnCon's Pete Aller. “The question is, how can we help protect? How can we help prevent? That's really what we're about, and if we have to do something, how can we fix it quickly?”
Organizers say cybersecurity is a growing topic in the technology industry.
“Cybersecurity is becoming increasingly important, especially for businesses and critical infrastructure,” said VulnCon's Madison Oliver. “Cybersecurity and technology know no geographical boundaries, so hosting an event like this brings together in one place a diversity of thought and a diversity of perspectives to address the challenges we are all facing. We can really address some of the broader issues.”
The event was attended by companies such as Google, Amazon, and Red Hat.
Participants discussed topics such as supply chain security and vulnerability management.
Companies say this is important because large amounts of money are lost to cybercrime.
“Cybersecurity is extremely important in this day and age, when cybercrime costs trillions of dollars on a global scale,” said Dave Schwartzberg, Director of IT at First.org. .
The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) reports that it received more than 800,000 cybercrime complaints last year, resulting in more than $12 billion in total losses.
