Colby Covington is scheduled to fight at UFC 303 in June. He just has no interest in fighting Ian Machado Garry there.
Covington and Gary have been at each other's throats for the past few months, to the point where we weren't sure we wanted to experience the antics we're sure to witness if the fight gets booked. . However, Covington slowly but surely stopped barking at Gary, and silence fell as Ian called for Colby to sign the contract for UFC 303.
Covington recently appeared on the Hodge Twins Podcast and outlined his plans for the summer.
“I'm definitely going to fight this summer. Somebody's going to fight,” Covington said. “Yeah, they're trying to figure out who's the biggest name and the best business we can do for the UFC. International Fight Week is like the big event of the summer, and the UFC is We're going to have a big festival throughout, and it's going to conclude with this big pay-per-view on Saturday.”
“So I think that's when they're planning International Fight Week for me. I'm just trying to figure out who's going to be that guy.”
“I had some unfinished business in my last fight, Leon Edwards, who currently holds the title,” he added. “I broke my leg in the first five seconds of that game. I threw a kick and it broke in three places. So that wasn't me that night. Maybe to get back to him. You're going to have to fight someone else. It doesn't matter who you are.”
“Chaos” did not sell “The Future” as a potential opponent.
“I have a kid who calls me,” Covington said. “This kid, Ian Garry, is a nobody. I gave him some conditions and said, 'Hey, if you want to fight me, you've got to show me you mean business.' Because when you do business, you take it seriously. I show up for every fight. I've never been out of a fight. I got injured. I got sick. But I love the UFC as the best organization in the world, so I always show up and do my job. So he has to show me that he's serious. ”
Gary suffered from severe pneumonia and was forced to miss his fight against Vicente Luque at UFC 296. But as for Covington, he walked out right before the press conference to avoid getting Colby badly burned.
“He was scheduled to be at my last press conference. He knew I was going to be on stage and was going to have some beef, so he was absent the day of the press conference. That meant he was… I can tell you're not serious.”
Is Covington seriously considering competing at UFC 303? If so, he may have to accept Gary as the only welterweight capable of returning to title contention.
