The debate continues: Will Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney have a rematch?
Following Garcia this week Suspensions, fines and wins A failed pre-fight test for the banned performance-enhancing substance Ostarine leaves doubts as to whether the eternal rivals will ever meet in the same ring again.
Haney (currently 31-0 due to a New York State Athletic Commission ruling that the bout was a no contest) said Friday he is considering a lawsuit against Garcia (24-1) seeking damages for the three knockouts he suffered in a majority decision loss to Garcia in their April 20 bout at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The 25-year-old Haney, who made eight figures from the bout, including pay-per-view earnings, was offered just over $1.6 million by Top Rank for his mandatory WBC 140-pound title defense against Spain's Sander Martin.
Haney has strongly hinted at his intention to relinquish the belt and take an extended break.
“Everyone was a loser in this case. [fight]”Probox TV commentator and former 140-pound titleholder Chris Algieri said on Friday's episode of “Deep Waters.”
“Devin Haney took a big hit. The value of his winnings fluctuated… You don't think that's the effect of the loss? It doesn't matter if the loss was wiped from his record, that moment happened.”
“Not only did Ryan lose money, but people will always remember him as the guy who failed a drug test. He lost two fights. [because of the year-long New York suspension]Tens of millions of dollars each.”
But “Deep Waters” commentator Paulie Malignaggi said he expects a Garcia-Haney rematch to happen at some point, possibly at welterweight.
“People want to see this fight. [Garcia] Did we really win? [the banned substance] Is it really going to affect him?'” Malignaggi said.[Garcia fans] I'd love to see him fix this.”
But Algieri said Garcia's erratic behavior before and after the fight convinced him “there are enough pitfalls” to prevent the bout from happening.
“It was a good fight,” Algieri said of the April bout, “hopefully they'll both be at the same weight this time, but we're not going to see that.”
