Welcome to Midnight Mania!
The biggest event of all time, perhaps UFC 100, is less than 24 hours away. One of Conor McGregor's biggest events? We don't know if UFC 300 will break pay-per-view (PPV) records like The Notorious, but it's a solid UFC event from top to bottom. There is no dispute that there once was.
What fighter wouldn't want to headline such a big, high-profile event? Surely every athlete has been trying a bit for the chance to star in the most important fight card in years?
There aren't that many.
A middleweight grudge match between Israel Adesanya and Drikas du Plessis was widely discussed as a possibility, but du Plessis' health was not resolved in time. Similarly, Leon Edwards accepted three potential opponents for UFC 300 (Belal Muhammad was not one of them), but three potential welterweight title challengers also declined for various reasons.
Alex Pereira vs. Jamahal Hill is now set to be the headliner, but according to a recent interview with Magomed Ankalaev, it may not even be the light heavyweight's first choice. Ankalaev claims he has given up on a title shot because of Ramadan, but he also claims he is promised his next light heavyweight title.
“This match is especially interesting for me because I was promised to meet the winner,” Ankalaev told MetaRatings (via Google Translate). “Actually, I was asked to play.” [Alex ]Pereira participated in this competition, but had to decline because it was the holy month of Ramadan.
“I've been in this sport for a long time and I don't see any danger in any sport. I don't really care who wins. We had both. There was only one goal: to win the belt.”
This is a bold move by Ankalaev, considering the promise of a UFC title shot doesn't always pay off.
That being said, Ankalaev certainly deserves a big chance. The Dagestani sambo ace defeated Johnny Walker in January (see here), extending his current unbeaten streak to 12 matches, with a “no contest” and a draw. The draw came in his first UFC title fight against Jan Blachowicz, and Ankalaev found the decision extremely unsatisfactory, calling himself the “uncrowned champion.”
We will have to wait a little longer before an official coronation can take place.

Islam Makhachev shares his thoughts on the crowded upper section of the lightweight division:
In Islam Makhachev's latest interview, he discusses the current state of the lightweight division ahead of the fight. #UFC300:
– Max Holloway says he has the “least chance” of the four but will need a “magnificent” finish to win the title.

The match between Benoit Saint-Denis and Dan Hooker is a must-see. Shall we cage together? That's a good thing!
| Dan Hooker has been told by the UFC to take part in a fight against Benoit Saint-Denis in September, and he says that's fine, but he wants to fight before then.

Jon Anik is a real fight fan!
The kimura is not a common submission in MMA, but that doesn't mean the figure four grip isn't valuable as a means to improve your position or control your opponent.

In MMA, you need to land a left hook to the body followed by a hook upstairs. Brandon Moreno is great!
Alex Pereira's fight week honors lanky left hooker
Carlos Zarate, the guy I always mention, is the guy who uses left hooks to the body instead of jabs. He also liked the right lead. He generally didn't like jabs. pic.twitter.com/nCRoV3MWEs

Great southpaw check hook, one of Jamahal Hill's better shots!
This kind of videos are always interesting to me. I've actually seen it happen. I strongly recommend it.
