Cumberland girls soccer head coach Scott Davidson has announced the hiring of Obed Compean as an assistant coach for the team.
Compian brings to Cumberland a proven track record of success from his 30-year tenure building and leading soccer organizations at the professional, collegiate, high school and club levels.
“We are pleased to add such an experienced coach to our staff,” Davidson said in a statement. “We look forward to further strengthening our program with Obed's coaching experience and knowledge of the game.”
The California native currently serves as CEO of Nashville Rhythm FC, a women's premier soccer league that Compean founded in 2016. Under his leadership, Nashville Rhythm FC has become an elite powerhouse in the WPSL, achieving a .648 winning percentage and winning the Southeast Conference three years in a row. The team has advanced to the postseason every season, was South Region Champion in 2022, advanced to the National Final Four Championship Series and reached the National Semifinals.
In addition to his role with Nashville Rhythm FC, Compean has served as the associate head coach of the Father Ryan High School girls soccer varsity team since 2006. During his tenure, the Irish have won four state championships (2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020) and reached the state semifinals in 2013, 2018 and 2019.
In 2013, Compian became the associate head coach of the Father Ryan High School boys varsity soccer team and won a state championship in his first season. The Irish team reached the state finals in 2021 and 2022. Since 2013, Compian has coached both the girls and boys varsity teams at Father Ryan High School.
Compean spent three seasons as a goalkeeper and goalkeeping coach with USL semi-pro teams Tennessee Rhythm and Nashville Metros from 1999 to 2001. He then served as head coach and assistant general manager of the Metros' PDL team from 2004-2010.
At the collegiate level, Compean served as an assistant coach, goalkeeper coach and player recruiter for the Trevecca Nazarene University women's soccer program for five years. He has continually been instrumental in placing athletes into collegiate programs and advancing amateur players to the professional ranks around the world. Eleven of the former Nashville Rhythm players he coached have progressed to professional soccer in the United States and overseas.
Compean has also been involved at youth level, serving as head coach or director of coaching at eight youth clubs in the region between 1997 and 2021.
During his playing career, Compian competed at the semi-professional level, playing goalkeeper for the Tennessee Rhythm from 1999 to 2000 and the Nashville Metros from 2000 to 2001. He also played for the Metro PDL team from 2004 to 2009.
Compean holds USSF National “E” and “D” Licenses, NSCAA National Diploma, NSCAA GK Level 1 and 2 Diploma, NSCAA Special Topics Course (Striker/GK Certificate), and NSCAA Advanced National Diploma.
