Kansas' new head coach, Nate Lee, comes to the scene during his time at Xavier.
Fresh off its spring game in Minnesota on Sunday, the Kansas State football team shifted its focus to the fall, announcing its 2024 schedule on Wednesday morning.
This will be the Jayhawks' first season under new head coach Nate Lee, who came to the university from Xavier in the offseason. Mark Francis retired in October after 25 seasons at the helm.
The conference also serves as the university's introduction to the modern Big 12 Conference, which loses Texas and Oklahoma State and adds Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah. The Jayhawks will play these newcomers as part of an 11-game conference schedule, up from 10 games last year.
“I'm excited about my first season coaching in this great conference,” Lee said in a press release. “We will be playing all four of the newest teams in the conference and will be playing against many different playing styles, climates and regions of the country. We are looking forward to the challenge!”
The schedule begins with an exhibition game on the road at Arkansas and a nonconference opener before the Jayhawks make their home debut Aug. 22 against Tulsa.
“The upcoming fall 2024 schedule will be a true test for our group,” Lee said in the release. “Starting with the exhibition at Arkansas, we will be facing experienced and mature teams, three of which were in the NCAA Tournament last fall. That experience will help us prepare for Big 12 play. He will prepare well.”
The conference opener against Iowa State on September 12th will also be played at home.
Other notable dates on the schedule include a home game against Friends University, a Wichita-based NAIA school, on September 15th, followed by a return to Cincinnati for Lee on September 19th. . UC, and Xavier.
The Jayhawks are scheduled to play back-to-back games against two Arizona schools on Oct. 17 and Oct. 20, before concluding their conference schedule on Oct. 25 with the Sunflower Showdown in Manhattan. Last year, Kansas State was the only team KU beat in league play. .
