Chel Sonnen has slammed current middleweight champion Drikas du Plessis' decision to compete at UFC 300.
The historic UFC 300 took place last Saturday, April 13th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Current UFC middleweight champion Drikas du Plessis (21-2 MMA) joined the other fighters and sat cageside watching all the events unfold.
Chell Sonnen was working on the event as an analyst on the ESPN desk.
The original plan was for “Stillnox” to take on Israel Adesanya (24-3 mixed martial arts) for the title at UFC 300, but that didn't happen.
Reason – Du Plessis was still dealing with an injury following his win over Sean Strickland (28-6 MMA) at UFC 297.
In a video uploaded to his YouTube channel, Chael Sonnen shared his thoughts on du Plessis, who attended the inauguration event.
“Adesanya and du Plessis were offered the main event. One of them said no. According to interviews, it appears it was du Plessis. That's his career and he's done a great job at it. But if you can't fight due to illness or injury, please don't come. It was the strangest thing in the world. And I couldn’t believe the commenters didn’t point this out… If that’s true, you shouldn’t be there!”
Chael Sonnen further criticizes Drikas du Plessis for showing up at the venue (h/t MMANews):
“If he's there, he's not (sick or injured)!”…You just exposed the fact that it's a hoax. I really think so. Are you going to turn down the fight and what are you going to do about it? “Hey, Danna, can I get you tickets to the game?” What? ! I couldn't even imagine it. This sport is rife with fake tough guys. He only has to play three times a year… Can you imagine saying, “No, Dana, I can’t fight”? Keep the money, I’ll keep the belt. Well, let's talk later. Hey, could you arrange a ticket for me? Can you even imagine? I have pride and am not a freak, so I can't do that! ”
