Scottish featherweight boxing champion Andrew Tam has died, days after being seriously injured in a motorcycle accident.
He was 28 years old.
According to the BBC, Tam was riding a Kawasaki motorbike when he collided with a Hyundai in the Scottish village of Cumbernauld.
Tam was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, where he died on Sunday.
Tam, who is 6-2 in his professional career, defeated Jack Turner to become Scottish featherweight champion last September.
“Andy was a champion in the ring and a distinctive character outside it. It was an honour to have him on our team throughout his professional career and we will all miss him greatly,” St. Andrews Sporting Club, who managed Tam, said in a post on X on Tuesday.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends and we ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.”
British Boxing Control, the UK boxing governing body, expressed their condolences.
“The British Boxing Board of Control extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Andrew Tam on the tragic passing of his life,” the board wrote in a statement to X. “Our thoughts are with them at this most difficult time.”
Tam lost a non-title bout to George Stewart last month.
“It was a real honour and pleasure to share the ring with him two weeks ago. He's a true warrior,” Stewart told the BBC.
“Heartbreaking is the only word that can describe this tragic news.”
