Cenovus Energy Superi Refinery provided a new field goal outside Cooper Elementary School. This is a huge step forward in helping young athletes who want to practice close to Superior. In fact, the Senior Football Association is looking forward to having its team practice there in the near future.
Senior Soccer Association president Sarah Shuster said it was reassuring to have dedicated training space for players.
“Last year, we started a tournament soccer team in Superior, which we had never had before. A lot of our kids were going to Duluth to play. We were playing teams like Hermantown and Cloquet and I was wondering why Superior didn't have a travel team,'' Shuster said. “We just kind of started, and this year it took off and we ended up with nine travel teams and five rec teams. We had 140 kids in the travel program. , we have another 60 kids in the rec program. All of a sudden we found ourselves with nowhere to practice. So we were kind of scrambling, looking for field space.”
Shuster said the new soccer field goal will benefit all of Superior, which is a hub for soccer, lacrosse and other sports.
“Then we had to fund nets and benches and create a safe area with some holes etc, which was also a challenge for a new organization with a travel program. Children in the community It's really great to have this big open field now being used to accommodate all of us.”
“We're always accepting new kids. We have a fall league. Registration for that opens in just two weeks. We have about 300 kids doing it at any given time. But you know, Being able to recruit talent helps all sports. Having a large complex like this makes it easier to achieve more long-term sustainability in terms of financial goals. . If we wanted to, we could host a tournament here, and we've never had a place to do that before. But now we can bring multiple teams to this one area.”
Football plays a huge role in bringing great communities together. Several members of the University of Wisconsin-Superior women's soccer team helped install a new field to get more kids involved in the sport. Lindley Schendel, Brenna Mattson and Niya Wilson said they wished Superior had a soccer field when they first started.
“I think it showed us how many people came and helped us. Once we got to the goal, the kids started playing right away,” Schendel said. It's just fun to see everyone who comes get so excited about it. It will be fun just to see the joy of sports spread. ”
The Senior Football Association also has a fall league, with registration starting in just two weeks. At Superior, many children begin playing soccer at a young age. Alexa Mooney said she can't wait to play soccer this summer because she's made so many new friends since she started playing soccer.
“It's just a great sport. First of all, I think it's the best sport. And most people around the world love it. So they should come and try it. The experience is It's really great. For example, if you don't have any friends on that team, you make friends because the team is great. It's just… it's all fun.”
