Scientists at Oxford University have developed a dye that attaches to cancer cells to give surgeons a “second set of eyes” as they fight tumours.
The dye effectively detects areas of cancerous tissue that cannot be seen by the naked eye during surgery, allowing doctors to remove far more cancer in real time, significantly reducing the chances of the disease recurring.
Freddy Hamdi, professor of surgery at the University of Oxford and who led the study, told Tech & Science Daily how they attached the dye to specific cancer cells and used a special camera to spot the dye during surgery.
An electronic headset designed to offer a new way of treating depression has been approved for wider use on the NHS.
Developed by Flow Neuroscience, the headset uses a brain stimulation technology called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to send weak electrical currents to the parts of the brain responsible for emotional expression.
A recent NHS trial saw patients asked to use the headset for 30 minutes each day for six weeks, with research showing that over 58% experienced improvement within that time period.
The study found it to be an “effective depression treatment” and recommended it as a more widespread treatment for depression.

The NHS is urging type O blood donors across the country to make appointments following a ransomware attack on a major London hospital.
