World champion boxer Savannah Marshall will make her MMA debut in June in the Professional Fighters League (PFL).
Marshall, who holds the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring women's super middleweight titles, will fight under MMA rules in her next bout.
She has not fought since defeating Franchon Crew-Dezrun to win the women's super middleweight belt last July.
The 32-year-old chose to fight in MMA and began training last year.
Marshall's first MMA contest will take place on June 8th at the PFL Europe show (opponent to be determined) at Newcastle's Utilita Arena.
“The Professional Fighters League is proud to have some of the world's best athletes on its roster, and on June 8, the PFL announced that “We welcome champion and martial arts icon Savannah Marshall to the Mixed Martial Arts Smart Cage.” In her debut she will be fighting in front of her hometown fans in Newcastle. ”
The only blemish on Marshall's professional boxing record was a unanimous decision loss to Claressa Shields.
And while a rematch with Shields, who picked up a split decision win over Kelsey DeSantis at PFL vs. Bellator, is being discussed, it's in MMA.
The American scored a points victory over the Hartlepool fighter in a boxing match in October 2022.
Commenting on the Shields vs. Marshall fight, Murray said, “When Savannah and Claressa Shields first fought, they competed in one of the most-watched women's boxing matches of all time. And now, with Savannah making her MMA debut, The two will clash for a rematch.” Wear 4-ounce gloves and use the PFL Smart Cage to determine your score. ”
Shields made her MMA debut in June 2021, defeating Brittney Elkin at PFL 4.
However, in her next MMA appearance, she lost a split decision to Abigail Montez at PFL 10.
The 29-year-old returned to the win column with a win over DeSantis last February.
If Shields is victorious in his MMA debut, he could potentially rematch Shields in an MMA bout under the PFL banner.
