2024 U.S. Olympic Selection
Two names are notably absent from the pre-sentiment sheet for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials. Caitlin Dobler There is no female presence. Daniel Roy Not present on the men's side.
Dobler was a consistent A-class finalist at the national level during the last Olympic Games. At the 2020(1) Second Round Trials, she reached the 100m breaststroke final where she placed fifth in a then-personal best time of 1:06.29. She narrowly missed out on representing the United States at the 2022 World Championships at the International Team Trials, where she placed second in the 50m breaststroke in 30.34 and third in the 100m breaststroke in 1:06.19, also a personal best. She needed a 1:06.12 time in the 100m breaststroke to make the team.
Last summer, Dobler won the preliminaries at the U.S. Summer Championships with a time of 1:05.86 and placed third in the finals with a time of 1:05.48. She also placed fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.47) and third in the 50 breaststroke (30.36). Dobler is the fifth-fastest American in the 100 breaststroke this season, having run a 1:06.71 at the pro series in San Antonio in April. She is also ranked sixth among U.S. women in the 200 breaststroke this season.
SwimSwam reached out to Dobler but had not heard back as of press time. Just six days ago, Dobler posted to Instagram with the caption, “Tapering time!”
Despite coming out of retirement, Roy is not on the men's mental sheet. Roy finished seventh in the 200 breaststroke at the 2020(1) Wave II Trials but finished his Stanford career at the 2022 NCAA Championships in March.
Roy returned to the sport earlier this year and in mid-March, he recorded the seventh-best time in the world in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:09.57. He has competed in just one meet since then and is the fourth-best American this season. His 2:09.57 is 19th best in the world this season.
