(Reuters) – A high-profile boxing bout between former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson and Jake Paul has been postponed from its July 20 date because of a recurrence of Tyson's stomach ulcer, organizers said on Friday.
In a statement, Paul's Most Valuable Promotions said medical experts had recommended that the 57-year-old Tyson continue with minimal, light training over the next few weeks to allow time for recovery before returning to full training without restrictions.
The American clash will be rescheduled for later this year at the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
“I want to thank my fans around the world for their support and understanding during this time,” Tyson said in a statement.
“Unfortunately, the ulcer has recurred and doctors have advised me to refrain from training for a few weeks to rest and recover.
“My body is in the best shape it has been since the 1990s and I plan to return to a full training schedule very soon.
“Jake Paul, this may have bought me some time, but in the end he will be knocked out and banned from boxing forever. I appreciate everyone's patience and can't wait to put on an unforgettable performance later this year.”
With a record of 50 wins, 6 losses and 44 knockouts, “Iron Mike” is one of the most feared heavyweight boxers in history, but he has not competed professionally since 2005.
Paul, a YouTuber turned boxer, is 30 years younger than him and has a boxing record of 9 wins and 1 loss.
