Boxing is one of the longest-running sports in the Summer Olympics, first held in 1904. Women's boxing joined the Olympics at the London 2012 Games, and both women's and men's boxing took place this year and will return to the Paris Games in 2024.
Cuba has been the country with the most medals in boxing at five of the past eight Summer Olympics, including Tokyo 2020. In the men's competition, Cubans won four of the eight total gold medals in various weight classes.
Claressa Shields became the last American to win a gold medal when she won the women's middleweight final at the 2016 Rio Games. She also became one of the first women to win a gold medal in boxing when she won the same event at the 2012 London Games.
