Over the past few years, we've seen a string of young fighters winning at various weight classes, climbing the rankings and garnering attention, and Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez earned high marks from our panel of experts when he faced future Hall of Famer Juan Francisco Estrada on June 29.
Rodriguez (20-0, 13 KOs) outscored Estrada, winning by knockout in the seventh round to win the WBC junior bantamweight title. Though just 24 years old, Rodriguez has already won titles in two weight classes and is currently ESPN's top fighter under the age of 25.
Rodriguez's win over Estrada was impressive and prompted most panelists to move him higher on their P4P lists.
“Bam” Rodriguez has quickly established himself as an elite, must-watch fighter. He doesn't just beat his opponents, he crushes top-tier opposition,” ESPN boxing reporter Mike Coppinger said in explaining why he moved Rodriguez up three spots to No. 5. “His destruction of Estrada was the latest example of his greatness. Rodriguez has joined the ranks of the likes of Terence Crawford, Oleksandr Usyk, Canelo Alvarez and Naoya Inoue as versatile fighters who are popular no matter who they face.”
ESPN boxing commentator Timothy Bradley Jr. agreed, saying Rodriguez's skill, versatility and performances against some of the best fighters in and around his weight class make him must-watch TV.
“Bam Rodriguez is hands down one of the top five pound-for-pound boxers of all time,” said Bradley, who ranked Rodriguez fifth. “Greatness is measured by continuing to give your best and Bam has certainly proven that.”
Rodriguez rose two spots to No. 7 on the top 10 list.
Shakur Stevenson and Teofimo Lopez also won, but each had to fight to the end against opponents who were long odds on winning. Stevenson was -3500 against Artem Harutyunyan, whom he won by unanimous decision on July 6. Lopez was -1200 favorite going into his bout against Steve Clagett on June 29. He also won by unanimous decision, but neither Stevenson nor Lopez were able to score a knockout or really trouble their opponents.
They took the final two spots to round out the top ten.
Voting panel members Coppinger, Bradley, Joe Tessitore, Teddy Atlas, Nick Parkinson, Eric Raskin, Michelle Joy Phelps, Claudia Trejos, Bernardo Osuna, Cristina Poncher, Eric Woodyard, Bernardo Pilatti, Charles Moynihan, Salvador Rodriguez, Jim Giroli, Michael Mascaro, Aladdin Freeman, Victor Lopez and Damian Delgado Averhof will be voting.
