The Phoenix City Council voted Wednesday to recognize Carvajal for his accomplishments in boxing and as a role model in the community.
PHOENIX — World boxing champion Michael Carvajal's hometown will soon have a street named after him.
The Phoenix City Council voted Wednesday to install ceremonial street name signs identifying Carvajal at the intersection of 9th and Fillmore streets and 10th and Fillmore streets.
Carvajal, a Phoenix native and current owner of 9th Street Gym, has won multiple boxing championships and won a silver medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He is in the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
At Wednesday's City Council meeting, several residents spoke about the positive impact Carvajal has had on the local community and the next generation of aspiring boxers.
“Michael Carvajal is a community leader who gives back by providing a safe space for youth and people of all ages,” city records state.
