British boxer Delicious Ollie withdrew from the super heavyweight competition at the 2024 Olympic Games on Monday night amid controversy.
The 27-year-old, who was born in Russia and moved to Britain aged seven, was seen as a strong medal contender for Team GB.
However, the judges scored the match 3-2 in favor of the Armenian, and he lost to Davit Charoyan.
Orie was in shock after the results were announced. “I can't believe it,” he said. “It's really disappointing, but I have to accept it and move on.”
“For the last eight years I've dreamed of winning an Olympic gold medal and now that dream has been taken away from me. I feel like I've let myself and my family down.”
Ollie added: “I can't believe it because I feel I've tried so hard. I feel I've been wronged but it's too early to say it's unfair.”
Many fans watching the game at home also strongly argued that the judges were wrong.
“This is so awful,” one fan fumed. “The UK team need to lodge a complaint.”
“There's no way Delicious Ollie lost that fight. Olympic boxing is corrupt!”
Elsewhere on social media, the result was described as a “robbery”.
“Delicious Ollie lost to David Charoyan. Utter disgrace,” one tweet read.
Meanwhile, someone tweeted a video from eight years ago of Irish boxer Michael Conlan saying that “amateur boxing is rotten to the core.”
Charoyan will face Spain's Ayub Gadfa in the 92kg quarterfinals on Friday.
Great Britain is the third most successful nation in Olympic boxing history, having won 20 gold medals to date.
