Will we actually see a fight take place between Mexican star Canelo Alvarez and the current consensus pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, Terrence Crawford? While this fight was an interesting topic for some fans, others rationalized that the physical differences between the two greats of the modern era made this fight unrealistic.
However, this does not mean that fights will not occur. And after his date with Jaime Munguia on May 4 is over, Canelo will start looking towards a fight in September. Canelo is on record as saying that he would not fight Crawford and that he would get little credit for defeating such a small man. But Crawford's trainer Bomac McIntyre wants to see the fight happen.
And in a conversation with Fight Hype last night, Bomac said that “Bud” would “kick his ass.”
how? By outboxing Canelo, McIntyre said.
When asked what would happen if Crawford faced Canelo, Bomack replied, “Bud would beat his butt.” “Outbox him, outbox him anyway. [the weight difference] It doesn’t matter – Bud has been fighting big guys all his life. Power? We know how to roll with the punches…we take the power away from you. How do I take power away from Power Puncher? I won't tell you! timing. [If the fight happens] That would be Errol Spence Crawford II.i respect that [Canelo said he would gain nothing from the fight], now you're going to look like an asshole because the little guy is going to beat you up. Avid boxing fans know that Bud has a chance to beat Canelo. He may be bigger, but he doesn't have the height or reach. He has a good boxing IQ, but he doesn't have the crazy IQ that Terrence has. ”
Bomac seems very confident that his buddy Bud will handle Canelo. Yes, the opposing fans will say, that's what he's probably going to do. However, Bomac made a good point, pointing out Canelo's height and reach. Both men are the same height at 5 feet 8 inches, but Crawford's reach is listed at 74 inches, while Canelo's is just over 70 inches. Will Crawford be able to outbox Canelo like Bomac says, or claims?
Who wouldn't watch this fight to know that? Whether this happens will ultimately depend on Canelo having the say and doing what he wants. McIntyre says Canelo will stop Munguia on May 4, but what Canelo will do next remains up in the air.
David Benavidez aside, Crawford may be the most interesting next challenger for the Mexican king.
