PHILLIPS — Bob Lloyd performed a show at the Phillips Public Library on July 20 as part of the Summer Reading Program. He has been entertaining audiences for more than 40 years with his unique combination of magic, juggling and mime. He got into magic as a child performing at birthday parties. As his skills improved, he began incorporating juggling and mime into his act.
In 1981, Lloyd enrolled in Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Clown College. After graduation, he toured the nation for two years with the legendary “The Greatest Show on Earth.” An avid martial artist, Lloyd holds a 5th degree black belt and continues to train and teach Taekwondo and Jiu Jitsu. Today, his lifelong skills are on display in his performances.
On a warm, sunny day, children and parents gathered in the Phillips Public Library's art studio. Decorated with lights, paintings and murals, the studio had a cozy atmosphere. The building, a former elementary school built in the 1800s, provided a charming backdrop for Lloyd's show.
Lloyd enthralled the audience from the start with a robotic dance to the music, then demonstrated his juggling skills with balls, clubs and cards. The children were excited, giggling and smiling as they worked hard on tricks such as spinning balls on their fingers with Lloyd's help. Despite the heat, Lloyd held the audience's attention with his lively music, dancing and showmanship.
Librarian Hedy Langdon unveiled the green space divided by vertical doors and explained that children will paint murals on each door, which will become part of the garden and commemorate the children's contributions.
The library's summer reading program dates are July 31 and Aug. 7 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will feature activities, books, games, crafts, snacks and more.
