FAIRFAX, VA – Bishop McCourt Catholic sophomore Jax Forrest defeated Nathan Tomasello in the 57 kg freestyle by a 1:18, 10-0 technical fall on Sunday at the 2024 Last Chance Olympic Team Trial Qualifier. and won the title.
Forrest, a 2024 PIAA Class 2A gold medalist who weighed 127 pounds, advanced to the U.S. Olympic Trials set for April 19 and 20 at the Bryce Jordan Center in Pennsylvania. Champions from each weight class from Sunday's event will compete in team trials.
Forrest is ranked No. 1 in the class of 2026 and No. 2 overall at 126 pounds by FloWrestling. He is the 2022 United World Wrestling Cadet World Championship runner-up. Forest, who went 53-2 last season, is the 2023 Super 32 champion.
Tomasello, 29, was a four-time national and Big Ten champion at Ohio State. He won his NCAA Division I national title in 2015 at 125 pounds. Tomasello finished third in the nation in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 NCAA Tournaments. He went 178-5 in high school and won four Ohio state honors.
Sophomore Beau Bassett, also of Bishop McCourt, lost to Matthew Kolodzik in the ’65 final by a 10-0 technical fall. Kolodzik was a four-time All-American (2016-20) at Princeton University.
Bassett defeated Rutgers University's 2019 national champion Anthony Ashnault 10-0 in the semifinals. Ashnault has the most wins in Rutgers history (123).
Bassett, the 2021 Cadet World Wrestling Championship freestyle champion, is ranked No. 2 in the class of 2026 and No. 2 overall at 138 by FloWrestling. Bassett went 56-0 and won the 2024 PIAA title at 139. He is a two-time Super 32 champion.
