Bergeron is a former Miami student-athlete who helped the program win its first CCHA title in 1993. He also spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach with the RedHawks from 2000 to 2010, which included two trips to the Frozen Four.
“Miami Hockey plays an important role within our athletic department and the entire campus community,” Saylor said. “This program has a strong tradition of success and achievement, and we will rely on that as we transition leadership of the program.
“Parting ways with Coach Bergeron was a decision based on a thorough analysis of his tenure as head coach at Miami,” Saylor added. “I would like to thank Chris and his entire family for their 19 years of service to Miami Hockey, our organization and our community as student-athletes, assistant coaches and ultimately head coaches.”
Miami ended the 2023-2024 season having lost 15 of its last 16 games.
Miami's last winning season was in 2014-2015, the Redhawks' second season in the NCHC, when they went 14-9-1.
“We immediately begin a search to identify a new leader who will enhance the competitiveness of our program within NCHC while maintaining the academic and community service standards we set for all student-athletes. I did,” Saylor said.
The RedHawks last reached the NCAA Tournament in 2015, when they won the NCHC Tournament. Miami played in the NCAA Tournament Frozen Four in 2009 and 2010, finishing runner-up in 2009.
