Intramural sports are a great way for students to get out of their dorms and compete against classmates and friends in a variety of sports. For student-athletes, internal walls can be used to play other sports and build teamwork and camaraderie with teammates outside of the season. The girls hockey and girls basketball teams had an opportunity to step out of their comfort zones by competing in an intramural volleyball game on Monday, April 22nd.
The first set of the match was a back-and-forth affair from beginning to end. The girls basketball team eventually secured the lead with a great serve from freshman Kylie Loomis and amazing spikes from sophomore Taylor Svoboda and junior Mallory Meyer. Taylor Hughes, a junior on the women's volleyball team who played on the women's hockey side, then rallied to bring her team within three points. However, the basketball team recovered and won the first set 25-21.
The second set was equally nail-biting. The basketball players extended their lead to 7-1, but the hockey team came back with a killer serve from junior Taylor Halverson. Hockey remained in the lead for most of the match with great serve from Hughes. Girls basketball struggled, but junior Beth MacArthur had a kill in girls hockey to take the set 25-21.
Basketball got off to a strong start again in the final set. Hockey tried to fight back, but basketball fought back and won 15-12 for the win.
Laney Martens and Sydney Seeley, seniors on the women's hockey team, expressed their joy at the mural inside the company.
“Playing volleyball with teammates strengthens team bonds and builds teamwork. We're positive, we're killing it, and we're having fun,” Martens said.
“Playing volleyball allows our team to bond and work together when we're not playing hockey. We're able to work on our plays together and it's fun to help each other out,” Seely said. echoed Martens' sentiments.
Murals are a fun and engaging way for students to enjoy college life outside of the classroom. Classwork and schoolwork often leave students feeling exhausted due to “Lawrence being busy,” so getting exercise and having fun is important to alleviate these problems.
