Former WBC International titleholder, Aitey Powers, has announced the launch of Aitey Powers Promotions, which aims to take Ghanaian boxers to the global stage.
Powers is also president of the Ghana Professional Boxers Association and is committed to helping local boxers win world titles.
The promotion’s inaugural event will take place on June 29, 2024 at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
The event will have a “Power of the Fist” theme and will feature competitions for both the National and West African titles.
This will be the start of Powers' envisioned series of regular bouts to keep boxers active and in top condition.
“We have a lot of talented boxers in our country. Looking at myself, I didn't go to school but boxing has taken me this far,” said Powers, a three-time national and West African champion.
“I want to help up-and-coming boxers to go even further than I did,” he added.
Speaking to the media on May 23, 2024, Powers stressed the need for continued competition to hone the skills of Ghanaian boxers and prepare them for the world stage.
“They are professional boxers, so if there are no tournaments, we can promote them and get them into fights at least once every one or two months.
“You have to pay them to fight for a world title. If I can't fight for a world title and I have the ability to help other people get there, why not?” he said.
Powers called on the Ghanaian government to support the initiative to ensure its success and sustainability.
He believes that with the right support, Ghanaian boxers can make it internationally and bring glory to the country.
The initiative is supported by Game TV, whose General Manager, Goodfellow Day Offei, stated the station's commitment to revitalizing boxing in Ghana.
“Our idea as a TV brand is to create a niche market for sports and gaming. We decided to back a few specific sports and boxing was one of them,” Offei said.
“We believe that boxing also needs a makeover, and so we decided to partner with ITEI to embark on this journey.”
