Australian Olympic equestrian Shane Rose has been rushed to hospital after suffering a serious fall.
The three-time Olympic medalist suffered a severe concussion, fractured femur, pelvis and ribs and remains in intensive care.
Rose had been cleared to compete in the Paris Olympics just a few weeks earlier and was attending a cross-country schooling session when she fell.
“As the saying goes, one day you're a peacock, the next you're a feather duster,” Rose's team wrote in a social media post Friday night.
“After a great week in New Zealand, Shane and I [his horse] “Virgil has secured his Olympic spot,” they said.
“Shane literally came back to reality this week.”
“Yesterday, during class at cross country school, Shane suffered a bad fall.
“Fortunately, his horse was not injured in the fall.
“Shane is currently in the ICU with a badly fractured femur, fractured pelvis and ribs. He also suffered a severe concussion.
“Shane underwent surgery this morning to stabilize his femur and pelvis.”
They said Rose is “doing OK” and has a strong medical team and support network.
“Although the timing is unfortunate, we hope he has enough time to recover and continue his preparation schedule for the Paris Olympics.”
The sport's governing body was investigating Rose after complaints were made about the orange mankini she wore at a costume event in February.
His skimpy outfit raised eyebrows when he rode a horse wearing only Borat's famous costume at the Wallaby Hill Extravaganza in the NSW Southern Highlands.
Rose was then allowed to continue preparing for the Paris Olympics.
