SYDNEY (AP) — Australia's Olympic team Paris The proportion of women reached a record high of 55.6%.
The Australian Olympic Committee said on Wednesday that there were no women on the team at the last Olympics, in Paris in 1924.
Of the 460 members representing Australia in 33 sports, 256 are women. This marks the third consecutive Summer Olympics in which Australia has had more women than men on its team.
This is the third-largest Australian team to compete at an overseas Olympic Games after Tokyo 2020 (486) and Athens 2004 (482). The Australian Olympic Committee said Australia was likely to also have the third-largest delegation in Paris, despite its relatively small population of 27 million.
There are 10 Indigenous players on the team for the Paris Olympics, which run from July 26 to August 11, and NBA star Patty Mills will become the first Indigenous Australian athlete to play in five Olympic Games.
The Australian team is expected to win a total of 48 medals and 13 gold medals. Projections by Nielsen's Gracenote Sports.
Team captain Anna Mears, a two-time Olympic gold medal-winning track cyclist, said it was remarkable how consistently Australia had athletes in so many sports.
“We take it for granted, but we punch above our weight,” Mears said.
