Jack Savino is a senior defenseman for New Trier Green. He was named to the All-State team and helped Green win the state championship on March 13th.
1. Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?
There are a couple. I used to have to eat the same meal before every game, but I stopped eating that because I got injured. I try to take a nap before every game, but it doesn't always work out.
2. What are your plans for next year?
I'm going to Miami, Ohio. It was between there and Boulder (Colorado) when I was about 12 years old. One of my sisters went to Boulder and the other went to Miami. I visited both several times and ultimately decided that Miami was a better fit for me. I love Oxford (Ohio). The school is clean and has great resources.
3. What is your favorite thing to do on the ice?
Go out with a friend's family. I'm a very sociable person, I like lots of activities and I like being outside.
4. Who is your favorite athlete?
It used to be Cristiano Ronaldo, but when I was younger he quickly switched to Duncan Keith (Chicago Blackhawks – retired). I also started liking Patrick Shaw (Chicago Blackhawks – retired). Because I like his aggressive side.
5. If you could play any other sport, what would it be?
football. 100 percent. I think it's a very nice sport. Friday night lights and all that stuff that I think is so cool. Soccer is very physical and I'm a fan of physical sports.
6. What was your last meal?
Probably something to do with chicken. I'm a big chicken guy.
7. If you had a few dollars at Walgreens, what would you buy?
A large smart water bottle that lasts all day long. Try to take your gallon a day.
8. What do people not know about you?
Recently, I revealed to everyone I know that I can juggle. And I'm actually very good at drawing. That's my hidden talent. I'm pretty good at sketching. Just random stuff. I like drawing mountains. That's probably what I'm best at.
9. What do you like about hockey?
The constant pace of the game is very intriguing. I don't think there's anything better than being able to play a sport where you can skate 24 miles an hour and run into guys at full speed and get props for that. It's not easy to score, the feeling of making a good pass, and the locker room has to be one of the best parts of hockey – getting to know the players in 20 minute increments, with the group of players I want to get to know. Getting to know each other I don't know anything other than hockey.
10. How does it feel to end your high school career with a state championship?
It feels unreal. There is no better feeling in the world. It's been such a long season, and I couldn't be happier to have a reward like this at the end of the season. It really shows all the effort you put in throughout the year.
