All those early-season losses now seem like a lifetime ago for the Aspen High School girls soccer team, which beat Moffat County 10-0 on the AHS turf Thursday. It was Aspen's first game since March 16, before spring break, and the Skiers' home opener.
AHS coach Chris Ellis said, “We still have a lot of games to play, but we're happy to get our first win of the season.'' “The girls had a pretty long spring break whenever you went on vacation, so it's great to have them back.”
As for Thursday's game, the Skiers very easily defeated a Moffat team that had lost all four games by 10-0 by Mercy Rule and is currently 0-4 overall.Aspen led 6-0 at halftime and scored 10 points.th He reached the goal in about 6 and a half minutes of the stipulated playing time.
“I was very happy with the week of practice and I think it showed in the game,” Ellis said. “They implemented certain play patterns into the game that we were trying to do, which is always fun to see.”
It was a much-needed win for an Aspen team that was struggling before the break. The Skiers lost their season opener 4-0 to Crested Butte, then tied 1-1 against Telluride. They then lost to Grand Valley 1-0 and then Vail Mountain 5-1 to open the league season.
The skiers, who currently have a league record of 1 win and 1 loss and an overall record of 1 win, 3 losses, and 1 draw, are hoping to accumulate their first victory.
“We have a lot of freshmen this year, a lot of new faces, and everyone is doing really well,” Ellis said of the team's slow start. “But it takes time for a team to gel, for relationships to build, for partnerships to form within the game.”
Aspen's season continues through Tuesday's Rifle Expedition.
The Basalt Girls are now 1-5 (0-1) after suffering a forfeit loss to Delta on Thursday. The Longhorns are tentatively scheduled to host Roaring Fork on Tuesday.
