New York Islanders President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello announced today the hiring of Tommy Alverin as an assistant coach.
Alverin has served as head coach of the Swiss national team for the past eight seasons, serving as assistant coach to seven World Championship teams, seven World Junior Championship teams and three Olympic teams. Alverin and the Swiss national team won silver medals at the 2024 World Championships this spring and the 2018 World Championships.
Prior to his tenure with the Swiss Ice Hockey Association, Alverin spent eight seasons as a coach in the New Jersey Devils organization. He served as an assistant coach with New Jersey from 2007-08 to 2009-10, during which the Devils reached the playoffs each season and won their division twice. Alverin served as an assistant coach with the Albany Devils from 2010-11 to 2013-14, before returning to the New Jersey bench in 2014-15.
A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Alverin played 952 NHL games with the Quebec Nordiques, New Jersey and Calgary Flames from 1987-88 to 2005-06. The defenceman also appeared in 81 playoff games and won two Stanley Cup titles with New Jersey in 1995 and 2003. Quebec selected Alverin in the eighth round out of 152 draft picks.and He was selected first overall in the 1983 NHL Draft. He played his junior years at Djurgården in Sweden and represented his country at two World Junior Championships and four World Championships.
