One of the largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu facilities in the Pearland area, Alliance BJJ Houston Martial Arts & Fitness is located at 8498 S. Sam Houston Pkwy. E., Ste. 1800 in Houston has been making a name for itself since opening in 2015.
What sets this gym apart from other martial arts gyms is its holistic approach, emphasis on safety, and large facility offering multiple classes.
holistic approach
Unlike other gyms where students come to learn how to fight, Alliance BJJ Houston connects every aspect of life to training.
“It's a bit of a misconception that our goal is to teach you how to fight,” owner Danny Duckworth said. “As I tell my students, that's a perk of what we do, but our main goal is to teach you yourself. What you're good at and what you're bad at. Please tell me where it will rise and where it will fall, and try to address it seriously within your company.”
To help students stay healthy in every aspect of their lives, the gym features a sauna, small weight room, recipe guides, and even budgeting classes to help with household finances. All of this leads to holding students accountable. This is one of his five core values that Alliance BJJ Houston focuses on.
Jim's core values are:
- accountability
- make a difference in people's lives
- remain community-based
- education
- longevity
“Our job is to keep you healthy,” Duckworth said. “Your children depend on it. Your community depends on it. “You depend on it. That longevity, that education system, that community, that accountability, everything depends on us. It is about raising the standards of young people, because they are the ones we will lead into our future.”
Emphasis on safety
One of Alliance BJJ Houston's fundamentals is to prioritize safety in everything the gym does. To keep everyone safe, no one is allowed to start training off the road.
New students undergo a two-hour orientation, learn basic movements, register in the system, and undergo a medical exam. Before attending your first class, your instructor will answer your questions and review your schedule.
After that, the first class that students are assigned to is the basic class. Thanks to the cushioned mats and well-trained instructors, students are safely guided throughout the process, whether they are beginners or advanced classes.
“We really focus on the entry-level process,” Duckworth says. “We not only want people to understand how this system works, but we want them to have the confidence to know that through the basic system they are safe and are growing in the right way. I want you to.”
Class offerings
At Alliance BJJ Houston, we not only offer traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but we also offer other unique classes.
Programs offered include:
Alliance BJJ Houston strives to meet the needs of people at all stages of life by offering multiple different days and times. Although the schedule is constantly changing, Duckworth said he is committed to six days a week, including morning classes starting at 5 a.m., a lunch break, and evening classes until 8:30 p.m. Click here to see the latest schedule.
“The different types of people and professions that we train at our academy – first responders, stay-at-home moms, healthcare workers, lawyers, business owners, teachers, college students – all have one thing in common: and become better leaders among their peers,” Duckworth said.
All classes are mixed gender, with the exception of two women-only classes per week. There is only an age difference between children's and adult classes, and children are observed by instructors who decide when to transition to adult classes.
“Our facilities are designed to keep you healthy, keep you safe and keep you safe from injury,” Duckworth said. “That's how I designed the mat. I designed the process and I also designed the program itself.”
