Former world titleholder Albert Puello has praised Gary “Antuan” Russell, saying “he has very few weaknesses,” but believes he has identified at least one in the build-up to their showdown.
Puello is scheduled to fight 2016 U.S. Olympian Russell for the interim WBC junior welterweight title on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena as part of the Gervonta Davis vs. Frank Martin pay-per-view undercard.
Puelo (22-0, 8 KOs), 29, won the vacant WBA junior welterweight title against Botilzhon Akhmedov but failed a clomiphene drug test prior to his fight with Rolando Romero and was suspended for six months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, effective June 22, 2023. Puelo returned in December and won a unanimous decision over Hector Madela.
Known for his concussive power, the 27-year-old Russell (17-0, 17 KOs) is Puello's toughest opponent to date, with all of his bouts won by stoppage.
“Gary “Antuan” Russell is a great fighter, he has a lot of power,” Puello said. “He doesn't have a lot of weaknesses, but I believe I found one.”
Puello attributed his confidence to his thorough preparation against the left-handed fighter.
“I've only ever sparred with southpaws before and I couldn't be more prepared,” Puello said.
Puelo is looking to become a two-time world champion despite an unbeaten record and a failed drug test that cost him his belt. Russell, who has a 17-fight knockout streak, has wins over former world champions Rances Barthelemy and Viktor Postol, but this bout will be his first big step up against an opponent in his prime.
“I am more than ready to take advantage of this incredible opportunity that has been presented to me,” Puello said.
