In recent years, the Alabama Crimson Tide football program has had success acquiring wide receiver talent out of high school and through the transfer portal, and the development of that talent has been notable as well, with numerous receivers making their way to the NFL in the early rounds of the draft and establishing themselves as quality players at the professional level.
All of this was under the direction of legendary head coach Nick Saban, who is now retired and former Washington Huskies head coach Cullen DeBoer is now at the helm of this historic program.
One of DeBoer's biggest acquisition successes of the offseason was the successful signing of junior wide receiver Jermy Bernard, who played under DeBoer at Washington.
In 2023, Bernard has played in 14 games, catching 34 passes for 419 yards and two touchdowns. At Alabama, Bernard is expected to play an even bigger role as one of the leaders of starting quarterback Jalen Milroe's receiving corps.
Bernard was recently described as a “draft gem” by CBS Sports' Blake Brockermeyer, who ranked the incoming Crimson Tide receiver No. 5 on his list of top 2025 NFL Draft prospects.
“A big-bodied receiver who can attack the ball in the air, put his body on defenders and get high points on contested catches,” Brockermeyer wrote. “He's expected to be a relief anchor for Jalen Milroe after a stellar spring.”
It will be interesting to see how Bernard performs in a new environment with a new quarterback and the same head coach, and while his numbers have been relatively disappointing, the sample size is still too small to give fans a clear picture of his strengths and weaknesses.
