In the 1920s, Morihei Ueshiba founded the Japanese style of martial arts known as Aikido. Almost 100 years later, in Clearwater, Myrna Harrod Tanigti has continued Ueshiba's legacy by teaching aikido to local residents since 2017.
Sensei Harrod Tanigti combines an easy-going approach with the non-competitive nature of Aikido, resulting in what her students describe as a peaceful environment. A total of 30 students of various ages have registered for the 2023/24 class, with four of the young students successfully achieving Green Belt level training on 13 March.
Black Press attended Harrod Tanigti's last class before spring break on the evening of March 13th. After class, student Margot Venema explained how participating in Aikido classes was beneficial to her. I felt energized during class. ”
Although many students attend Harrod Tanigti's classes to improve a variety of mental and physical health benefits, most of them are motivated by Aikido's intended goal of working towards self-improvement. We can accommodate you. As with most martial arts, it is very important when entering the dojo to let go of the negative aspects of life and focus on the more positive aspects of yourself. Once these positive aspects become clear, you can apply them to your daily life.
Aikido also provides self-defense techniques. Harrod Tanigti said of this art, “It is not only a physical self-defense, but a spiritual self-defense of the mind.”
Aikido classes will resume in April after spring break. For more information or to register for an Aikido class, call 250-674-8881 or email rce@docbc.ca. The next session he will begin on April 9th and will continue until May 30th.
