Adrien Broner has always been a controversial figure in boxing, but when asked who he thinks is the best fighter in the world right now, he gave a shocking answer.
After his rise to the pinnacle of world championship success, Broner suffered setbacks and a lengthy absence from the ring, but he is looking to reignite his career when he faces Blair Cobbs on June 7 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
Broner, now 34, won a 10-round decision over Bill Hutchinson last June, but Hutchinson was nowhere near world champion level.
Ahead of his next fight, he was asked by Fight Hype who he thinks is the best fighter in the world right now, and while he praised Terence Crawford, he named a surprising name as the best fighter in the world right now.
“Terence, Terence Crawford. For me it's Terence Crawford. As far as boxing goes it's Terence. But as far as the No. 1 guy goes it's Gervonta Davis.”
“When you go to see Tank fight, it's not just a fight, it's an event, and the whole world comes to see him. A lot of people want to see him win, and a lot of people want to see him lose.”
Crawford's suspension means that for some, he has dropped down the pound-for-pound rankings, as he has not fought since last July when he established himself as unbeaten at welterweight with an impressive win over Errol Spence Jr., a feat he had already achieved at super lightweight.
He went on to talk about why he loves Davis, whom he's known since he was 14 years old.
“You know why I respect him the most? There are a lot of people who would probably do things differently if he were in the position he is in now, but he still sees me as an older brother.”
“Regardless of the money, the name or the fame, he comes around and treats me like a big brother. That's what I respect about him and I love him to death.”
Davis' next fight is against Frank Martin on June 15th, but he has a number of big fights coming up that could solidify his place at the top of the pound-for-pound rankings.
