Eliza Bircher scored the only goal of the game off a corner kick from Ella Seymour as the Abingdon Falcons won 1-0 in the Mountain District 7 girls soccer showdown Thursday between Southwest Virginia's top teams. .
Goaltender Gabi Cox made five saves in the shutout win.
Both teams ended in a scoreless tie in their first match.
“A lot of credit to Central,” AHS coach Jordan Blackson said. “They have given us some challenging games in recent years. They are well-coached and play disciplined defense. For them to bring the game today We knew that. I think we moved off the ball well early on, took our chances and took advantage of our corner kicks. We held the advantage for most of the second half. Gage Hilton had two hits and Max Herndon and Brayden Newberry scored for the team.
Herndon scored on Connor McCracken's RBI double in the sixth inning, and Newberry crossed the plate on Ben Hale's RBI double in the seventh inning.
