Texas Tech University news updates for May 20, 2024 are as follows:
Just over a month after finishing runner-up at the 2024 Masters, Texas Tech University golf alum Ludvig Aberg was able to recreate that magic at the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. There wasn't. He shot an even-par 142 in the first two rounds, joining Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm and Phil Mickelson as notable players to miss this weekend.
One factor working against Aberg may have been a bad knee. Aberg, who withdrew from last week's Wells Fargo Championship due to a knee injury, competed this weekend with a brace on his knee. But once the competition begins, he said the brace won't be a hindrance.
“I wear a brace for safety reasons,” he said. I'm concentrating on golf. ”
Although Aberg didn't qualify this week, he's still enjoying success in his first full season on the PGA Tour. He ranks seventh in the FedEx Cup points standings with 1,510 points and has earned more than $6 million in prize money.
On Friday, the Texas Tech baseball team ended its 2024 regular season at Arizona State with mixed results. Tech, which split a doubleheader with UNLV and Arizona State, did little to boost its NCAA Tournament hopes.
In the first game, the Red Raiders won a walk-off and escaped with a score of 13-12. After giving UNLV a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning, Tech fought back with six runs in the bottom of the inning to begin an eventful game.
Tech then added one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth to take a 12-4 advantage. However, UNLV scored eight runs in the final three innings to tie the game.
In the bottom of the 9th inning, TJ Pompey hit a ball past UNLV's first baseman and scored Tracer Lopez from second base for the winning run. This moved Tech to 31-23 on the season.
In Game 2, the Red Raiders lost to Arizona State 17-11 in another high-scoring game. It was a back-and-forth affair in the early going, with both teams trading blows until Tech took a 9-7 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning. At that time, the Sun Devils scored seven points, putting the game out of reach.
Texas Tech enters this week's Big 12 Baseball Tournament facing the prospect of needing to win the entire event to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The 10th-seeded Red Raiders begin their game against third-seeded Texas at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Last week, former Texas Tech safety Darcel McBath returned to his alma mater as an analyst on Joey McGuire's football staff. Previously, McBath was the cornerbacks coach at Mississippi State from 2020-23.
“We are excited to welcome Darcel and his family to our hometown of Texas Tech,” McGuire said. “His experience will make Darcel a valuable addition to both our offensive and defensive staffs in this new role on our staff.”
McBath's role primarily involves scouting opponents and assisting the Red Raiders with their own scouting. As a player, he was one of the best safeties in program history, recording 224 total tackles and 12 interceptions. That includes seven picks as a senior during Texas Tech's memorable 2008 season, when the Red Raiders went 11-2.
