Texas Tech Red Raiders news summary for April 15, 2024.
This weekend, former Texas Tech golf star Ludvig Aberg played in the first major tournament of his career and was one of the stars of the event. Aberg entered the Masters with a -7 RBI, finishing second to champion Scottie Scheffler.
The 24-year-old earned All-American honors and the Haskins Award three times during his Red Raider career. He turned pro just a year ago after the college golf season ended and is now one of the sport's rising stars, already playing for Europe in the 2023 Ryder Cup.
“This is my first major championship, but you never know what it's going to be like until you get there and experience it,” he said. “I think this week gave me a lot of experiences and I learned a lot of lessons in those respects. It makes me so hungry that I want to do it again and again.”
Aberg posted 73-69-70-69–281 over the weekend. But on Sunday, he suffered a double bogey on the 11th hole, likely ending his hopes of winning a green jacket. Still, he bounced back by shooting 2 under par in the final seven holes to secure second place and win more than $2.6 million in prize money. Furthermore, by finishing in the top 12, he qualified for the 2025 Masters.
The Texas Tech baseball team dropped two of three games at TCU this weekend in Fort Worth. It was a disappointing result despite a strong start to the series on Friday night.
In the opening game, pitchers Ryan Free, Jacob Rodgers, and Josh Saunders combined to hold the Frogs to just one point in a 7-1 victory. TCU led 1-0 in the third inning, but Tech answered with three runs thanks to RBIs by Drew Woodcox, Owen Washburn in the fourth and TJ Pompey, who hit a home run in the sixth.
On Saturday, TCU responded with a 4-2 victory. This loss ended the Red Raiders' winning streak at eight. After the game was tied 2-2, TCU hit singles in the sixth and eighth innings for the final lead.
On Sunday, the Red Raiders were close to ending the game with a 4-3 lead in the ninth inning. Gavin Kash led off with a double from the top of the frame, but the Red Raiders were unable to bring him home with a lineout, a flyout, and a strikeout, ending the inning with two men on base. Life is a mess for Tim Tadlock's team, as the Red Raiders enter this weekend ranked No. 1 in the nation but head to the Natural State to face an Arkansas team that dropped two of three games to Alabama. It's never easy.
The Texas Tech softball team had a successful weekend in Lubbock. The Red Raiders took two of three games from Kansas and improved to 26-13 overall and 6-9 in the Big 12.
On Friday, Tech erased a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning when Demi Elder homered Riley Love, the Red Raider's third of three runs in the home team's final at-bat, erasing a two-run deficit and making it 6-0. I won with 5.
On Saturday, Kansas fought back with a 15-12 win in eight innings. In the loss, Abby Orrick had four hits, including a career-high seventh home run of the year.
Runcie Willis pitched a complete game in Sunday's 4-2 Red Raider victory, improving them to 3-0 on the season. At the plate, Elder hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, giving his team the lead for good.
This was Tech's second Big 12 series win of the season. The Red Raiders will resume play on Friday, starting a three-game series against Oklahoma State.
