Lightweight contender Abdullah Mason will face Augustin Quintana (19-2-1, 12 KOs) at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City on August 17. The bout will be broadcast live on ESPN and ESPN+ at 10pm ET/7pm PT.
It was already known that Mason would play in the game on August 17, but now the opponent has been revealed. For Mason, it is a lateral move from his previous opponent, Luis Lebron, and it can be said that it is not the big name that fans were expecting.
Mason vs. Quintana will take place on the undercard of the super middleweight bout between Cristian Mbili and Sergey Derevyanchenko. It's unclear how far down the undercard the Mason vs. Quintana bout will be placed, but he's competing at a higher level than other lightweight prospects, so it makes sense he'll be in the bout.
Abdullah Mason's last four opponents:
– Luis Lebron: TKO 3
– Ronal Ron: TKO 4
– Benjamin Grumento: TKO 2
– Jose Cardenas: TKO 2
The 20-year-old Mason (14-0, 12 KOs) to attract attention Last Saturday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, Shakur Stevenson defeated Luis Lebron by technical knockout in the third round.
Not much is known about the 27-year-old Augustin Quintana, having spent his seven-year professional career in Argentina fighting out of the public eye.
Mason, from Bedford, Ohio, likely drew more applause than any other fighter on the card with an exciting performance in which he methodically out-battered LeBron, who had never been knocked out before, but who didn't stand a chance.
The fight should have been stopped in the second round after Mason knocked LeBron down twice and after the second knockdown LeBron was seen looking into the corner and appearing to ask for help.
Mason seems ready to face someone stronger than Quintana, and Top Rank would do Mason a real favor by sending Keyshawn Davis to dominate him in a bout and show him if he's worthy of keeping the 2020 Olympian.
At 25, Keyshawn is much older than Mason but isn't on the path to superstardom like him, so having Abdullah Mason take on Keyshawn would be a good way to use him as a stepping stone to a world title shot he's hoping to get by next year.
Mason seems good enough to beat WBC champion Shakur and WBO champion Dennis Belincik, and the only person who could give him a hard time is Gervonta “Tank” Davis.
