Giants of the Martial Arts World is a simulation game that puts players into the world of Lucas, a young trainer who inherits a Jiu Jitsu gym in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Players will learn how to run their own gym through classic tycoon elements, develop future champions with customizable workouts and classes, and also immerse themselves in the diverse culture of Rio de Janeiro.
“We're excited to be working with Good Dog Studios on this exciting new game,” said Chance Glasco, CEO and creative director of the indie studio Good Dog Studios. Giants of the Martial Arts World—Previously worked on Medal of Honor: Allied Charge He later co-founded Infinity Ward, call of duty Franchise. Glasco had just turned 20 when he entered the game industry, and after about 13 years of working on first-person shooters, he told Game Rant, “I wanted to do something different.” Eventually, he ended up in Brazil, a country he visited many times as a guest speaker, and founded Good Dog Studios, whose core team also has experience working in the AAA field. At Gamescom LATAM, Glasco told Game Rant that he was done making “the biggest games ever,” and wanted to do something more impactful.
Every NPC's life path tells a story
The player Giants of the Martial Arts World On an empty rooftop in a favela, the aspiring martial artist eventually ends up in a gym where the player meets various NPCs with different backgrounds and traits. In the teaser trailer, Jair Camara is shown to have the traits “Early Reader”, “Loner” and “Farmer”. The player can also see the skill levels of the NPCs. For example, Jair is level 4 in Jiu-Jitsu and level 13 in Defense, Submissions, Passes, Sweeps and Takedowns. The player can train his students in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, self-defense and physical fitness, which will ultimately affect their personal traits.
All NPCs are procedurally generated and have their own life path. Glasco explained that in simulation games, someone who grew up with drug-addicted parents is more likely to have drug-related personality traits, which have negative effects. However, training in jiu-jitsu can help improve personality traits and get rid of negative effects. However, negative traits are not completely avoidable. If the player makes “bad choices,” they can also give their fighter negative traits. An example of a negative trait is the Bully. This can be used to increase strength and athleticism, but it increases the chances that the fighter will hurt other NPCs during training. In that case, the player must decide whether to welcome that student into their gym.
Glasco has also moved to Brazil, which helped him portray the people of Rio, and, of course, he says it wasn't just his own experience attending the games.
I think if you want to paint a picture of Brazil, you can do it much better if you actually live here.
Even after living in Brazil for a total of over three years, I still don't have the whole picture. All of my friends are Brazilian and I have a few close friends in Rio – one works in city hall and another lives in the same developed community depicted in the game, so I get to see different perspectives, from different people, different walks of life.
Martial Arts Big Name Shines Light on Real Community in Brazil
Glasco also noted that many media outlets, such as the 2002 film City of God Or in 2007 Elite Troops Brazilians are often portrayed as drug dealers, traffickers, and overall bad people. He has also openly admitted that he was probably complicit in this stereotype. In 2009, Modern Warfare 2 The game takes players to the slums of Brazil, where they battle militias made up of criminals and worse. Despite the stereotypes portrayed in the media, Glascoe stressed that the people who live in these areas are much more than a one-dimensional criminal stereotype. Good Dog Studios is “trying to address some of those stereotypes through the game.”
When we talk about favela-related topics and what's going on in those communities, we want to show the difficulties that the people who live there face. We don't want to get into politics, because that would just create division and so on. But we want people to understand some of the difficulties that those communities face.
Despite mixed martial arts being loved all over the world, there has never been an MMA tycoon game before. Punch Club As Glasco said, it was close, but players will be managing a boxer instead of a full gym. It will be interesting to see how Good Dog Studios implements the various tycoon elements, addresses Brazilian stereotypes, and shows the effects of climate change throughout the game.
