The City Council unanimously approved a letter of intent between the city and the United Soccer League (USL) on Monday.
ROSWELL, Ga. — The city of Roswell is considering the possibility of developing what it calls a historic women's soccer stadium and an anchored entertainment district.
The City Council unanimously approved a letter of intent between the city and the United Soccer League (USL) on Monday. The agreement provides for a nine-month period of exclusive negotiations until the end of the year. If necessary, there is an option to extend negotiations beyond the December 31, 2024 agreement.
If an agreement is reached, the stadium will be home to a professional women's soccer team that competes in the Division I sanctioned USL Super League and a USL Championship professional men's team.
“The City of Roswell is excited to enter into exclusive negotiations with USL with the potential to bring men's and women's professional soccer to Roswell,” Mayor Curt Wilson said in a news release.
Sites for a potential entertainment district and multipurpose stadium have not yet been selected.
“This is an unprecedented opportunity for our city. We are still at the beginning of the process and many details need to be worked out, but we look forward to exploring possibilities with USL.” added Wilson. “With a new entertainment district, multipurpose stadium, and two professional soccer teams, it will be a major economic driver and point of pride for the city of Roswell.”
According to a news release, the stadium will seat at least 10,000 people and USL will serve as the stadium's “anchor tenant” and have the right of first refusal to serve as the stadium's operator/manager. That's what it means.
The mayor and USL Deputy CEO Justin Papadakis are scheduled to hold a press conference about the negotiation period at City Hall on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
