KALAMAZOO, MI — For the third consecutive time in program history, the Western Michigan University hockey team has advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
The Broncos will play the MSU Spartans on Friday, March 29th in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
On Monday, coach Pat Ferschweiler and captain Luke Grainger spoke to the media about upcoming tournament matchups.
“Honestly, I'm very proud of this group. We've grown together and we've got a lot of new players this year as well. We gave up a lot of points last year. We stepped in right away and In a sense, we were chosen to pick up where we left off,” Farschweiler said.
He continued, “I think it was a great season. Our play was better than our record. We had a good record this year, and I think some of that showed in our NCAA Tournament appearance.” continued.
This will be WMU's ninth tournament appearance in program history.
“I'm really excited. Three years in a row is no easy feat. I'm excited to be back in the tournament,” Grainger said. “When we play Michigan State, it’s going to be a really good battle, a really good game.”
Granger was named captain at the start of the 2023-24 season.
In 2022-23, Granger set career highs in goals (12), assists (20), points (32), shots (60) and plus/minus (+18), leading the Broncos to a 23-15 record. Contributed. Ranked 1st overall in NCHC with 15 wins, 8 losses, and 1 draw.
