The Gwinnett County Commission is scheduled to vote Tuesday night on a deal to sell the former Olympic Tennis Center for $5.6 million to Fuqua Acquisitions, which plans to build a Costco, four restaurants and an apartment complex on the site. are planning.
The board approved the development of 26 acres near Stone Mountain in October. At the time, officials did not say which retailers were slated to open at the location, but renderings appeared to show a Costco and a Whataburger.
The proposed agreement between the county, development authority and Fuqua lists Costco as the big box retailer and Greystar as the multifamily developer, but does not include details about the restaurant. One-fifth of the 248 apartments will be set aside for households earning up to 80% of the area median income.
The development will also include green space with playgrounds and similar amenities.
The now vacant lot was once the tennis stadium where Andre Agassi won gold at the 1996 Olympics. Gwinnett County purchased the land for $1.2 million in a 2016 land swap with DeKalb County and demolished the stadium.
Developer Jeff Fuqua proposed a more upscale development for the site in 2020 that would rival Peachtree Corners Town Center. Officials envisioned it as the “southern gateway” to Gwinnett. But Fuqua said last year he wasn't able to get many retailers interested.
District 2 Commissioner Ben Koo declined to comment Monday on the proposed sale. Fuqua and County Commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.
A Gwinnett County spokesperson said Fuqua will not receive any tax breaks for the development.
In community meetings and emails, many residents of the nearby Mountain Park neighborhood expressed support for building a Costco at the site, although some said the land had greater potential.
This property is located in the Park Place Tax Allocation District, where property taxes go towards community improvements.
